Manchester United 1 Bayern Munich 1: Thrilling Draw Delights Moyes

David Moyes says Manchester United are proud of his side’s performance in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in a Champions League quarter-finals first leg tie.

Bastian Schweinsteiger leveled for the reigning European champions on 67 minutes, after Nemanja Vidic had gave the hosts the lead 2 minutes to the hour mark against the run of play.
“The players played really well so we’re delighted but just a bit disappointed that we conceded in the end,” Moyes told ITV.

Pep Guardiola’s side will now play without the services of the Germany international, after the midfielder was issued his marching order for hacking down United striker Wayne Rooney as well as Jarvi Martinez, who accrued his maximum number of yellow cards on Tuesday.

“There was a real determination to make sure we did well, the players realised we were playing a really good side tonight,” Moyes added.

Welbeck then failed to score after being picked out by a Rooney straight through pass, one-on-one with the goalkeeper the England international went for a chip over the head of Manuel Neuer, who swatted it away.
United got in the ascendancy 13 minutes into the second-half when Vidic, who was totally unmarked steered in a header from Rooney’s cross.
Schweinsteiger lashed in an equaliser and a potential blow to United’s hope of progressing, slotting a difficult Mario Mandzukic headed pass into the top left corner.
“We know we’ve got to score a goal in the second leg. We have to do something about it. But we know we’ve given ourselves a great opportunity,” Moyes stressed.
Game on, but Jarvi Martinez would soon go into the book, likewise Bayern goalscorer for a second bookable offence which left the visitors with only ten men on the pitch after 90 minutes with scores settled at a goal apiece.
Bayern manager Guardiola: “I am quite satisfied. Manchester United has one of the best teams in the world. We scored an away goal which is important, but we also got lucky that efforts from Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney did not go in. The goal we conceded was difficult to defend.
“It is always dangerous when you go into the second leg with a 1-1 draw, but even a 2-1 victory would have been dangerous. We will try to win the second leg and I am sure we can do it. I have full confidence in my players and hope the fans in Munich will push us like the United supporters did for their team today.”
