China is considering a plan to cover the entire world with a network of surveillance satellites.
If it went ahead the plan could see more than 50 observation satellites in orbit within two years, The South China Morning Post reported. This would put the country’s satellite surveillance capabilities on a par, or greater than, the US.
The paper said support for the massive upscale was fuelled by China’s frustration over the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370.
After a three-week search satellites have been unable to locate for certain debris from the disappeared plane, which was carrying mainly Chinese passengers on a scheduled flight to Beijing.
“If we had a global monitoring network today, we wouldn’t be searching in the dark. We would have a much greater chance to find the plane and trace it to its final position,” Professor Chi Tianhe, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, told the paper.
There are currently about 1000 satellites in orbit above the planet, though most are only for communications. Of these around 150 are for observation, remote-sensing and spying, according to statistics from the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Fly Emirates Ambassador

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Fly Emirates Ambassador

1ronaldo
Emirates airline on Friday announced that Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal captain and reigning Fifa Ballon d’Or title-holder, is its newest global ambassador.
In the same press conference, held in Madrid, the Dubai-based airline, which is a worldwide partner of football’s governing body Fifa, also premiered its campaign video featuring the football superstar alongside Brazilian legend and fellow Emirates global ambassador Pele.
The announcement comes just 74 days before the Fifa World Cup — the world’s most watched sporting event — kicks off in Pele’s home country of Brazil.
Twice named Fifa Player of the Year, Ronaldo, who plays for the Emirates-sponsored Real, will lead his national team to South America to compete in his third tournament.
In January, Emirates announced three-times World Cup winner Pele as their first global ambassador since the 2006 competition in Germany, when Franz Beckenbauer was brought on board.
Boutros Boutros, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice-President of Corporate Communications and Brand, said: “Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Pele are well-known around the world. It is not only that their names and faces are synonymous with top-quality football, but also that they have the ability to inspire and connect with people within and beyond the sports arena.
“Each year Emirates is involved in more than 200 sports events, where fans and customers share exclusive experiences. This campaign reflects the Emirates philosophy to go beyond transporting people and to connect them through sports and culture.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is an icon for this generation of football fans and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers on the pitch today. He has broken records and earned awards throughout his career. He is massively talented but he doesn’t rest on his laurels. Instead, he works hard to continue pushing himself to new heights. This ethos, plus his ability to inspire fans across the world, is why we are delighted to be working with him.”

TY Bello Releases New Portfolio Of Work Starring Phyno

TY Bello Releases New Portfolio Of Work Starring Phyno

Screen-Shot-2
Toyin Shokefun-Bello, better known as TY Bello came into the spotlight singing with the now defunct group KUSH.
In addition to being a brilliant singer, TY Bello is also a photographer, and her skill in picture taking has won her several laurels including a recent appointment as the official photographer to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
However, the singer who has been off the music scene for quite a while is back in the news again; not because of a new release but on the subject of her second love which is photography.
Rapper Phyno recently became the focus of TY Bello’s camera lens as she followed the Igbo Rapper through the streets of his hometown in a series of gritty, iconic shots .
In some of the pictures which were released this week, we see as TY Bello captures Phyno on the streets, in an abandoned spare part shop, and beneath massive powerlines portraying Phyno in moments of personal reflection in public places which we believe are meant to be symbolic of Phyno’s personal journey and eventual rise to popularity under heavy public adulation and scrutiny.
TY Bello’s past photographic subjects include some of the most notables names in Nigerian social and artistic circles, the first lady Patience Jonathan and Professor Wole Soyinka, to mention just a few.

Obasanjo: I’ve Forgiven Atiku

       Obasanjo: I’ve Forgiven Atiku

atiku_abubakar_olusegun_obasanjo_746638344Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, responded to the request of Northern Youth Leaders Forum, NLYF, to forgive his estranged former deputy, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, saying; “I have forgiven him”.
Atiku reportedly fell apart with his boss during their second tenure, which began in 2003, over the Adamawa politician’s perceived desperation to succeed his boss, who was also scheming behind the scene to have his constitutionally guaranteed two-terms of eight years extended for what became known as ‘third term’.
Obasanjo, who stated this after a two-day meeting with the forum in Abeokuta, Ogun State, said he had also forgiven other persons perceived to have offended him.
The Forum, led by its chairman, Elliot Afiyo had pleaded with Obasanjo to forgive his then deputy of whatever political offence or sin he might have committed against him.
Atiku, who was vice-president from 1999-2007, has stated at different fora that he did not hold any grudge against the Ota farmer for using state power to scuttle his own presidential aspiration, insisting that his differences with Obasanjo were based mostly on politics and respect for rule of law.
The former president in response to request by the NYLF said as a leader and father, he had no ill-feelings towards anyone and even if he once did, he had since moved on.
He said: ‘On the request that you made yesterday, I do not have any grudge against anybody. And if there is any, I’ve forgiven all as a father”.
Obasanjo, who thanked the group for coming to Abeokuta to make case for a way forward for the country, recalled that since 2003 the group had witnessed increase in membership.
“The effort of your group has been noteworthy. I’m happy that you have also increased in number. Let me appreciate all your support since 2003 and urge you to continue by ensuring that credible leaders are elected in 2015”.
Leader of the delegation, Afiyo had earlier said that the group was in “Abeokuta to visit our Baba to identify with his vision for our great country, Nigeria”.
In a position paper submitted earlier on Saturday, he said: “We have come to you (Obasanjo) as a father indeed.
“With your positive attributes, Chief Obasanjo has no option or alternative than to chastise and later forgive and embrace both the good and bad characters.
“In view of this, we humbly request that you forgive your former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of whatever political sin or offence he might have committed against you. We bow oursleves before you on his behalf and plead for mercy and understanding”.
The national chairman added that the mission to come and plead for the former VP did not in anyway stop him from charting any noble political course for the nation come 2015.

NLC Tells FG To Suspend Planned Sale Of Refineries, Others, Calls For Probe Of PHCN Privatization

NLC Tells FG To Suspend Planned Sale Of Refineries, Others, Calls For Probe Of PHCN Privatization

the-president-of-the-nlc-mr.-abdulwahed-omar-9997567890The Nigeria Labour Congress has advised the Federal Government to halt any plans it has to sell off public properties.
It also urged the National Assembly to investigate the recent privatization of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and all previous sales and reclaim those properties that might have been sold to private interests.
The NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar in a statement on Sunday said, “The haste with which government seems determined to sell off public properties to members of the ruling class and their cronies under the guise of making them more efficient is alarming”.
The labour union’s position was in response to a statement credited to the Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki that the National Council on Privatisation had listed the nation’s four refineries for possible privatisation this year.
The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Deizani Alison-Madueke, had earlier in the year reiterated her position that the Federal Government was ready to privatise the refineries. However, following strong opposition from organized labour, the government was forced to deny knowledge of any such plan.
But later, Dikki said the NCP had approved the partial privatisation of the Bank of Industry and the Bank of Agriculture; the privatisation of the Nigeria Commodity Exchange, Skypower Catering & Hotel Services and commercialisation of the national parks.
He further said that efforts were geared towards concluding the guided liquidation of NITEL/MTEL and the policy/legal and regulatory framework review to prepare the grounds for the commercialisation of the media enterprises including the Nigerian Television Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, National Films Corporation and the News Agency of Nigeria.
NLC in a statement titled “Stop selling public properties,” said, “There is the need  for  caution  because these properties belong to the Nigerian people as a collective wealth and the people have never been consulted and their interests considered before the sales.
“It is scandalous that the same government who had always promised to use the gains from the petroleum price increases, which it has received over the years, to reactivate existing refineries and build additional ones can turn around to announce the privatisation of refineries.
“This is clearly unacceptable, and the public have strongly opposed this attempt several times in the past, even on the floor of the National Assembly”.
The NLC noted that there was no evidence that previous privatisations yielded positive results as electricity supply had deteriorated under the recent privatisation of the power sector.
“Government should not abdicate its social responsibilities by selling off everything that delivers services to the people. This is unwarranted, especially in a country where poverty and unemployment have become endemic coupled with the collapse of industries.
“What we need in Nigeria is not a blind adoption of neo-liberal policies that mortgage the interests and future of our people.
“Our national economy depends largely on the oil industry and if we allow the industry to be handed over to private individuals, it would then mean the entire economy would become private property run by private individuals, mostly cronies of those in government, against our collective interests”.
While advising the BPE to stop the proposed sales, the union urged the National Assembly to probe all previous sales and reclaim public properties that might have been sold to private interests.
“We must not allow the continuation of the robbery of our collective interests.
“Private individuals can build their refineries, but government must reactivate, maintain and take full charge of existing public refineries and also build new ones”, the statement added

21 Boko Haram Detainees Killed In Failed Jailbreak, Two Operatives Injured – SSS

21 Boko Haram Detainees Killed In Failed Jailbreak, Two Operatives Injured – SSS

sss-attackAt least 21 members of the terrorist sect, Boko Haram, who were detained at the State Security Service (SSS) headquarters in Abuja, lost their lives yesterday during a failed jailbreak attempt.
The Sunday morning incident shattered the peace of the highbrow Asokoro, which plays host to the high and mighty of society including the official residence of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the sporadic shooting sent shivers down the spine of many in the city.
The aftershock was felt across the country as initial reports suggested the Aso Rock Villa had come under attack from insurgents but the presidential spokesperson later assured Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan was safe and well, saying the shooting was from the SSS headquarters.
The SSS later doused the tension when it announced that there had been an incidence of attempted jailbreak.
The detainee, who coordinated the failed jailbreak, died in the ensuing melee while some detained insurgents and three SSS operatives were injured.
The SSS said 18 of the detainees were killed during the attempted jailbreak. Three, who were injured, later gave up the ghost in the hospital.
The service also said two of its operatives were seriously injured.
The SSS gave the breakdown in a statement by its Deputy Director, Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar.
The statement said: “Following our earlier releases, it has been established that eighteen (18) casualties were recorded, while two (2) Service personnel sustained serious injuries.
“Three (3) other detainees who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident have also died.
“Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the immediate and remote causes. Any other detail will be communicated”.
Ms Ogar had in her first reaction to the incident said it occurred during the breakfast session for the detainees.
According to her: “One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff.
“His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.
“The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat.
“The Army immediately deployed a team to reinforce our perimeter guards to forestall any external collaborators. The situation has since been brought under control. Further details will be communicated”.

Soldiers Kill 11 Insurgents, Apprehend Others Attempting To Escape To Cameroon.

armytroop
The military yesterday said 11 terrorists were killed when the troops engaged
the terrorists in a gun duel. Others were apprehended as they attempted to escape
to Cameroon through Taraba and Adamawa borders.
The Director, Defence Information and Coordinator of Joint Information Centre, Counter
terrorism Campaign Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday said the insurgents were attacked by troops on patrol of the areas in the ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.
“The terrorists were trapped following the ongoing offensive launched by troops along the borders. Some of them could no longer bear the hunger in their make-shift camps at the forest. Those apprehended led the troops to some hideouts where fierce fighting ensued and seven terrorists died, while Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, rifles and 70 motorcycles were recovered.”
The director added that “a similar encounter in Gumbi also led to the death of four other terrorists.”
According to him, sustained patrols and searches by the Joint Task Force had led to the arrest of more insurgents, including a heavily armed suspect, who claimed dual nationalities of Chad and Burkina-Faso. Olukolade said the suspect was arrested with different calibre of arms along the Chad border.
The defence spokesman said members of the task force were patrolling areas around the Lake Chad, including Kwatan, Kanwa, Kwatan Yobe and other areas to apprehend more of the insurgents.

Fake Preacher Arrested With Human Skull In Ibadan, Beaten To A Pulp

Fake Preacher Arrested With Human Skull In Ibadan, Beaten To A Pulp

skull-pastorA man, who disguised as a Christian preacher was, on Thursday, nearly lynched by a mob when he was found to be in possession of a human skull in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The ancient city has been on the edge since the discovery of a horror forest that was allegedly used by suspected kidnappers and ritualists in Soka area of Ibadan.
The preacher, who was dressed in white garment and going about preaching at the top of his voice while receiving money in exchange from passersby, was arrested at the Agbowo Junction.
It was learnt that a man had approached the supposed preacher to pray for him and after the prayers, they went their separate ways. But some few seconds after they parted, the man, who the preacher only just ‘prayed’ for, returned and made as if to donate some money to him (the preacher), but instead forcefully grabbed the polythene bag the fake cleric was holding and in the process, the skull dropped.
A mob, having been attracted by the shocking discovery, descended on the fake preacher and beat him to a pulp. But for the quick intervention of policemen attached to the Kajorepo Police Division, he would have been beaten to death or set ablaze.
He was later whisked away to the police station.

Turkish Airlines denies arms shipment to Nigeria

Turkish Airlines denies arms shipment to Nigeria

19 March 2014,
Turkey's national carrier denied on Wednesday allegations of arms shipments to unknown groups in Nigeria.

"Turkish Airlines, in accordance with company policy, does not ship arms to countries ... where there is a power vacuum or conflict," the airline said in a statement sent to AFP.

"There have been no arms shipments from Turkey ... to (Nigeria)," it added.

In a tape posted on YouTube on Tuesday, Mehmet Karatas, an airline executive, allegedly tells Mustafa Varank, an advisor to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that he feels guilty over the national flag carrier's arms shipments to Nigeria.

"I do not know whether these (weapons) will kill Muslims or Christians. I feel sinful," Karatas is allegedly heard saying.

The leaked audio tape has the potential to harm the airline's image - which is 49 percent state-owned and is in an aggressive push to become a global player.

It was the latest in a series of recordings implicating Erdogan and his aides in corruption and other abuses of power ahead of crucial local polls on March 30.

The Turkish premier, in power since 2003, has dismissed most of the tapes as "vile" fakes put together by his political opponents.

Jonathan orders end to strike by Colleges of Education

Jonathan orders end to strike by Colleges of Education

19 March 2014, 15:11

Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered that the protracted strike embarked upon by lecturers in Colleges of Education across the country be brought to an end.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu Wogu, announced this when he addressed members of National Association of Nigerian Students’ Joint Campus Committee in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that the strike would be over soon. "The President has mandated that this industrial action by your teachers should be brought to an end.

"The president is determined to make sure that education is revamped from the state he met it. The grievances and demands of your teachers have received Federal Government’s attention.

"It is very painful that education system in this country has been in a state of decadence over three decades’’, he said.

Wogu described education as a topmost priority of Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda, hence the need for his intervention to restore normalcy in the sector.

The minister appealed to the striking lecturers to go back to class as government had shown commitment to meeting their demands.

Chairman of the students’ joint committee, Adediwura Adesina, appealed to the minister to use his good offices to ensure that the strike was brought to an end.

"We understand and appreciate the way your ministry has been handling this issue so far. We are here to appeal to you, sir, to help us end the strike.

"The 2015 election is around the corner, we do not want any politician to use our students as thugs as they are presently roaming the streets’’, Adesina said.

WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH MEN TODAY? : DEVILS IN HUMAN SKIN: Five men rape 17-year-old girl and post pictures on internet ... SunNews

rapists-young-700x336
Five young men are currently in trouble in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State. Their crime? They allegedly gang-raped a 17-year-old Senior Secondary 3 girl and posted pictures of the criminal act on the Internet
According to Daily Sun investigations, the boys, sometime in February this year, accosted the innocent girl, Ezema Ginika, in Ankpa when she was returning from an errand. She was allegedly hit with a ring suspected to have been charmed. She immediately fell unconscious, it was learnt.
The boys then took her to an uncompleted building where they turned her to a sex machine. Besides raping her in turns, two of the suspects also took photographs of the act.
The pictures were later circulated to friends through the internet while some were printed and circulated in the town
While parading the suspects before journalists, the state police commissioner, Seidu Madawaki said immediately the girl became unconscious, the suspects collected her handsets, tore her underwear and took her to an uncompleted building where they satisfied their lust one after the other.
The police boss gave the names of the suspects as Musa Bala, Uchenna Chiaghanam, Farouk Edeh (now at large) Jemilu Wada ( now at large) and one other person. He lamented that the boys had engaged in a most odious act, wondering how the suspects would feel if such thing was done to their daughters or sisters.
He said the world had, in the name of civilization, been turned upside down, noting that the suspects would certainly not go unpunished. He vowed that the long arm of the law would soon catch the fleeing suspects.
Speaking with Daily Sun, the leader of the gang, Musa Bala who confessed that he actually initiated the act, said he got the talisman ring from a juju man in the village, saying he merely wanted to test the potency of the charm.
“I have been admiring this girl for a long time, and when I approached her to be my lover, she turned me down, saying she could not befriend an Igala boy, I left her in annoyance and vowed that I must do all I could to get her.
“So, when I saw her passing, I said, this opportunity must not pass me by. Then I went to gather my friends and blocked her near one mango tree. I called her name and said today I must have sex with you.
“But I want to tell you that it was only three of us that actually had sex with her. The other two were busy filming us and taking our pictures,” he added.
Narrating her ordeal to Daily Sun, the victim said Bala had been disturbing her since last year. She said the boy, at a point, even threatened to beat her if she would not succumb to his amorous moves which made her to report him to one his relations.
“On this particular day, my father sent me on an errand and while I was coming back, I did not know that these boys were trailing me. They just accosted me in a corner and started saying some funny, funny things.
“When I sensed that I was in an unprotected area, I wanted to run away, but Bala overpowered me and hit me with something. Then I fell down and became unconscious.
“I did not know what actually happened again until I just came back to my senses after about two hours, only to see that I had been messed up. My underwear, my bra and everything had been torn. Oh my God,” she cried.
Also speaking with the reporter, father of the victim, Mr Ginika, a petty trader in Ankpa, said it was a sympathiser that drew his attention to the ugly incident which prompted him to quickly alert the police.
He called on the police to ensure that they arrest the fleeing suspects and prosecute the boys to serve as a lesson to others.

NIS Recruitment Stampede: Minister Sets Up Probe Panel, Orders Release Of Dead Bodies To Relations

NIS Recruitment Stampede: Minister Sets Up Probe Panel, Orders Release Of Dead Bodies To Relations

MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, ABBA MORO WITH ONE OF THE INJURED VICTIMS AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL, ABUJA
MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, ABBA MORO WITH ONE OF THE INJURED VICTIMS
The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro has promised that no stone would be left unturned in the probe into the circumstances that led to the death of applicants during the nationwide test conducted over the weekend by the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS.
Moro during a visit to the National Hospital, Abuja, on Sunday expressed regrets about the incident and confirmed that 19 people have so far been discharged, while eleven others are still receiving treatment.
The minister also ordered the immediate release of the dead bodies to their relations after proper documentation.
His words: “So far 11 persons are still on admission. Most of them have recovered from the shock of yesterday and they are in a very stable condition. And five female and two males died. I have promised that the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will do everything possible to ameliorate the consequences of the stampede. I think it is premature to talk about employment.
“I have seen the situation and it is unfortunate. If you look at it, you will see that it was all a sign that people attempted to break into the stadium forcefully and in the process people were trampled upon and unfortunately they lost their lives.
“Just like it is in other parts of the country, the reason for the decentralization of the exercise across the states was to ensure that we have reasonable numbers in all the centers that can be controlled. But unfortunately, the preliminary information that is available to me shows that people who didn’t apply were also trying to gain entrance.
“In a stadium like this that has the capacity of 70 thousand people and we had registered people. But unfortunate several unauthorized persons came in here especially pregnant women. In a paramilitary situation I am surprised that pregnant women would want to come and partake in this exercise that involves physical exercises.
“This is not a moment to apportion blames, this is a moment of some level of national tragedy. It calls for some level of understanding among Nigerians and to know that our intentions was to transparently conduct this exercise to ensure that we provide a level playing ground for all Nigerians that are legible to get enlisted to few slots that are available. The choice of the stadium is to take as much as possible eligible for the test.
“The committee will look at everything that is necessary to be done in this circumstance. It is the committee that will be setup later Sunday or first thing Monday morning that will include all stakeholders and non-governmental organizations. I can assure you that they will be given sufficient leverage to examine all the issues connected to this exercise with a view to coming up with observations and recommendations that will help to ameliorate the situation.
“Our consideration now is for those people who are still in the hospital and those dead. It is the committee that will tell us if to suspend or carryon with the exercise. NAFDAC Warns Against Uncontrolled Consumption Of Energy Drink

Energy-drinks-320x190The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control on Sunday warned the public against indiscriminate consumption of energy drink for health reasons.
Mrs Adeline Osakwe, Director, Pharmacovigilance and Post Market Surveillance Directorate of the agency, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
According to her, energy drinks are supplements that contained high caffeine and carbohydrate which are made to make a person hyper active.
“The effect of the caffeine in energy drink makes people to get high, to be stimulated and of course, it makes the person’s heart to beat faster.
“It can have adverse effects, especially when the person over uses them and it accumulates in the system. The caffeine in it can lead to increase in blood pressure.
“It stimulates the heart to the extent that it worsens heart disease condition; energy drink should not be used like drinking water”, she warned.
The director said energy drinks were mostly recommended for sports people when it was necessary to boost their energy after or before sport.
She said energy drink had not been considered as narcotic or hard drug because it only contained caffeine and its effects could be controlled.
Osakwe promised that the agency would intensify its awareness and enlightenment campaign on consumption of the product, advising that children should not be given energy drink.
She warned against drug abuse, stressing that many people had abused cough syrups which contained codeine.
Osakwe assured of the commitment of NAFDAC to safeguard health of Nigerians and urged the public to support the agency in achieving its mandates.

UN Queries FG Over Poor Electricity, Tariff

UN Queries FG Over Poor Electricity, Tariff

The government of President Goodluck Jonathan has been queried by two United Nations special rapporteurs “over the impact of the Multi-Year Tariff Order II (MYTO II) and its potential detrimental impact on the realisation of human rights of people living in extreme poverty in Nigeria.”
The rapporteurs are: Ms. Magdalena Sepúlveda Carmona, Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights and Ms. Raquel Rolnik Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing as a Component of the Right to an Adequate Standard of Living, and on the Right to Non-discrimination.
This came following a petition last year by a coalition of human rights activists, labour, journalists and lawyers led by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP.
In the joint letter dated November 26, 2013, Ms. Carmona and Ms. Rolnik asked the Nigerian government to explain why “there is no functioning metering system in the country,” and expressed “grave concerns that the absence of functioning metering system limits the ability to accurately set prices for electricity and leaves electricity bills vulnerable to mismanagement and arbitrary decisions, disproportionately affecting people living in poverty.”
The two special rapporteurs also stated that “Certain groups already vulnerable to poverty and social exclusion, including women heads of households and persons living in informal settlements and in rural areas, may be especially affected by the rise in tariffs under MYTO II enacted by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on June 1, 2012.”
Last week SERAP received information from the offices of the special rapporteurs that “the government has chosen not to respond or engage with the concerns raised by them.”

Deaths At Immigration Recruitment Centres: PDP Mourns Victims, Calls For More Action Against Unemployment

Olisa MetuhFollowing reports of the death of scores of Nigerian youths as a result of stampede during the recruitment exercise at the National Stadium Abuja on Saturday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for a probe into the unfortunate incident.
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) conducted the exercise simultaneously throughout the 36 states of the federation and FCT.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, made the call in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He also called on the Ministry of Interior and relevant government agencies, to immediately swing into action to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the stampede.
Metuh further urged government agencies and parastatals, as well as all PDP elected and appointed officials at all levels of government to redouble their efforts at reducing the level of unemployment in the country.
This, Metuh said, was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda and the PDP manifesto.
He said the party was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the untimely death of the young citizens who were at the exercise.
The PDP spokesperson noted that the victims were not at the venue only to secure employment but also to be allowed the opportunity to contribute their quota toward national development.
Metuh added that it was unfortunate and disheartening that the victims paid the supreme price while trying to be more useful to the nation
He commiserated with the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

I’ve Started The Process Of Replacing Old Politicians With Younger Ones In Plateau, Says Jang

FROM LEFT: SENATE PRESIDENT DAVID MARK; VICE PRESIDENT NAMADI SAMBO AND GOV. JONAH JANG OF PLATEAU, AT THE SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICE THANKSGIVING TO MARK GOV. JANG’S 70TH BIRTHDAY IN JOS ON SATURDAY (15/3/14).
Governor of Plateau State and factional Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Jonah Jang, says he has started the process of replacing those he termed as “old brigades” with younger ones in Plateau politics.
Said he: “We have set machineries in motion to weed the old brigades from contesting in future polls as a way of minimising corruption in the system”.
Speaking on Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, at a lecture to commemorate his 70th birthday, Jang said that the old politicians in Plateau had refused to mentor the young ones to succeed them.
“The reason we have a lot of rot in the system is that the old politicians have deliberately refused to groom the young generation of politicians.
“We are ready to mentor the young politicians so as to take over from us.
“We are not against the old politicians, but we want those patriotic young people to take over the mantle of leadership from us”, he said.
Speaking earlier, the Senate President, David Mark, called on all those holding political office to emulate the good leadership qualities of Jang.
“Governor Jang is reliable, honest and committed to uplift the living standards of the common man in the society.
“Jang is committed to his principles and ideologies of salvaging the rural folks from misery, hunger and diseases”, he said.
The senate president lauded the organizers of the event to honour Jang, who he described as a friend, associate and colleague during their military days.
In his on remarks, Secretary to the Plateau State Government, Prof. Shedrack Best, said that the lecture was organised to provoke ideas that had link with the survival of the nation.
“The lecture has been designed in such a way that most of the nagging political problems facing the Middle-belt and Nigeria will be trashed”, he said.

Leadership Tussle: APGA Protests Exclusion Of Members From National Confab

Leadership Tussle: APGA Protests Exclusion Of Members From National Confab

Jonathan-OkurounmuFactional chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Maxi Okwu, has kicked against the exclusion of members of the party from the list of delegates to attend the National Conference scheduled to begin on Monday.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja weekend, Mr Okwu says the exclusion of members of the party from the conference based on the leadership crisis rocking the party is unacceptable, as a Federal High Court’s judgment had sacked Chief Victor Umeh as the national chairman of the party.
He, however, expressed the hope that the Federal Government would reconsider its position and allow its delegates to take their rightful place in the confab, in compliance with the clear and unambiguous judgment of the Federal High Court that adjudicated on the APGA leadership dispute.

Ministerial Slot Divides Kwara PDP

Ministerial Slot Divides Kwara PDP

pdpMajor stakeholders in the Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently embroiled in an underground battle over, who among them, would pick the state ministerial slot.
The state’s slot became vacant following the sacking of former minister of sports, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Though it was highly speculated that Senator Gbemisola Saraki was earlier pencilled down for the ministerial appointment, stiff opposition from other stakeholders of the party, who are equally interested in the highly coveted post, have put her choice on shaky foundation.
Those reportedly eyeing the position include the newly defected Mohammed Dele Belgore, former Transport and Sports Minister, Alhaji Bio Ibrahim and former Security Adviser to the state government, Alhaji Yinka Aluko.
According to a source, who spoke with Sunday Trust, the major challenge facing the party is leadership, with the belief that whoever becomes minister, would become the automatic leader of the party in the state.
“It is believed that the Minister is the automatic or presidentially anointed leader of the party in the state in the absence of a sitting Governor”, the source said.
However, the PDP in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Mariam Mohammed Al-Hassan described rumours of a purported division within the party as a result of ministerial position as untrue.
“For us in Kwara PDP, we remain united, focussed and dedicated to the achievement of the goals we have set in the search for ‘freedom for Kwarans’ in a short-while, indeed, we are on course.
“Nomination of any of our members for appointment into the position of Honourable Minister of the Federal Republic shall be a good omen towards the realisation of our desire for good governance at all levels for our people as there shall  be no ‘Victor nor Vanquish (sic)’ in the process”, the statement added.

Female Banker Defrauds Emir Of Kano

Female Banker Defrauds Emir Of Kano

Emir-of-Kano-Ado-Bayero-300x224
The princely amount of N46 million in the dormant bank account of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was simply irresistible for the young female banker.
So the suspect, Amina Magaji, was prepared to risk everything to reactivate the account and convert part of the balance there in to her use. The account was said to have been opened in 1967 but went dormant later. The suspect allegedly applied for a cheque book, got it and began to operate the account. By the time the bubble burst, she had, according to a source, withdrawn N17million from the account. Amina, alongside 12 other staffers of the old generation bank, is answering questions from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on the alleged fraud.
The suspect is allegedly married to a senior staff of a broadcast organisation.
Amina, believed to be in her late 30s, allegedly began systematic withdrawal from the monarch’s account since 2011 before she ran out of luck when her boss discovered discrepancies in the Emir’s signature.
An EFCC source disclosed that the suspected fraudster requested for a cheque book purportedly on the order of Bayero which the bank obliged her, but, unknown to other bank officials, the cheque book remained in her custody.
She consequently used the cheque to make withdrawals from the monarch’s account.
Bank sources revealed that Amina within the last four years withdrew N17 million from the Emir’s account before the scam blew open.
The EFCC source said the matter was reported to the anti graft agency for appropriate action, stressing that “consequent upon that, we invited and quizzed 12 staffers closely related to the account”.
An EFCC operative, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard on the condition of anonymity, revealed that “preliminary investigations indicate that many of them have case to answer as we are able to establish conspiracy and negligence on the part of those connected with the monitoring and control of the bank account in question”.
It was learnt that “the bank has raised the alleged stolen money through the 12 staffers quizzed by the EFCC and returned same to the Emir while the principal suspect has been fired as part of measures adopted by the bank to restore confidence.”.
In the meantime, the principal suspect is said to be cooling her feet in the EFCC custody pending the completion of investigation into the case.
EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwajeren, confirmed the story; but refused to go any further. [Vanguard]
