Until Nigeria’s Rid Of Corruption, NASS Will Not Stop Incessant Probes, Tambuwal Tells Critics

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has berated critics of the lower chamber over numerous investigations it undertakes, saying the probes are based on petitions from the public and outcomes of routine oversight functions by members.

He, however, assured that the day the country is free of corruption, Nigerians will no longer hear of investigations and probes.
This is just as Speaker Tambuwal announced the setting up of a six-man harmonisation committee, headed by the chairman of Finance Committee, Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin, to liaise with the Senate to produce a uniform copy of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
Tambuwal made this known yesterday while declaring open a public hearing organised by the House Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate allegations of unwholesome practices in Union Bank under the management of Mrs Funke Osibodu.
“I have heard comments from certain sections of the public decrying the incessant investigations and probes by the House of Representatives and indeed by the National Assembly. Let me hasten to say that we do not manufacture allegations in aid of probes and investigations; rather, these arise out of our routine oversight duties and written petitions from members of the public”, Tambuwal, who was represented by deputy leader of the House, Hon Leo Ogor said.
He added, “the day we rid the country of corruption and impunity, you will from that day, hear no more of probes and investigations”.
Facing members of the committee, Tambuwal charged them to live above board in carrying out the investigation, stating that the House “will not hesitate to take decisive measures where the need arises to protect its integrity as an institution”.
On the allegations being investigated, Tambuwal said it was of “serious public concern that in the course of corrective measures, allegations should arise regarding mismanagement on the part of persons entrusted with the mandate of a corrective regime”.
He, however, added that they remain allegations until the probe proves otherwise after fair hearing is granted to all parties involved to state their positions
