Following an illustrious playing career as a striker, he led Atletico Madrid, with whom he attained prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s, winning the La Liga title in 1977. He also won three Copa del Rey trophies at the Madrid club.
He played 265 La Liga games for Atletico, scoring 123 goals.

Aragones became the Spain’s national team coach in 2004. Four years later, the team clinched the European championship title by beating Germany 1-0 in the final.
He left the position soon after but the changes and foundation he made effected while at the team was crucial to their successful 2010 and 2012 World and European Cup campaign.
“[He was a] former player and coach of several Spanish and global clubs and the Spain national team at the beginning of their glorious success on the worldwide stage,” the Spanish football federation said in a statement.
He went on to coach Turkish side Fenerbahce, but had just a short stint of a single season.
